Solar Decathlon home used 4,000 sq. ft. of WALLSHIELD® Black.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
VaproShield donated 4,000 sq. ft. of WALLSHIELD® Black to University of Minnesota's Solar Decathlon house.
The University of Minnesota was one of 20 international teams chosen by the US Department of Energy to compete in the Solar Decathlon of 2009. The competition involved building a home that uses only sunlight for power. The entire home's heating, cooling, and electrical needs must be met by solar energy. One of the major challenges was that the home had to perform in both Minnesota and in Washington DC's (location of competition) solar climates.
The home actually produced 13 months of energy over a 12 month period. University of Minnesota took 5th overall and 1st in engineering. The total cost of the project was $1.3M and this was mostly met by donations.
VaproShield's WALLSHIELD® weather resistive barrier resists the damaging effects of moisture & UV exposure, adding to the overall energy effieciency of the home.
