Overview

VaproShield self-adhered wall membranes utilize pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) technology. In cold temperatures, applying increased pressure is essential to ensure proper adhesion. For all installations, materials must be pressure-rolled onto the substrate immediately after removing the siliconized release film. Follow these guidelines to achieve a successful application of VaproShield membranes in cold weather conditions. 2

Material Storage

  • For cold weather applications below 30°F (-1.1°C) ambient temperature, it is recommended to store the material in heated storage at temperatures above 60°F (15.5°C) for at least 48 hours.
  • Store membrane rolls on end, either on their original pallets or an elevated platform.
  • Ensure rolls are protected from weather exposure or stored in an enclosed area that does not exceed 120°F (49°C).
  • Avoid prolonged exposure of membrane rolls to UV light prior to installation.

Surface Protection

  • Surface preparation enhances VaproShield membrane adhesion.
  • Verify that all surfaces are in as new condition, clean and dry to the touch.
  • Do not apply if ice, frost or liquid water is present.
  • Substrate surface temperature can be verified using an infrared thermometer.
  • If surface temperatures are below 20°F (-6.6°C) adding mechanical fasteners is recommended.
  • Pressure rolling is required.
  • Stainless steel staples may be used in overlap areas to help installers initially secure the membrane to the substrate.
  • Staples should only be used in areas that will be covered by the overlap of the adjacent membrane.
  • In windy conditions, if additional exposed fasteners are needed, use VaproCaps with appropriate threaded fasteners, or install rainscreen cladding attachment system as soon as possible to secure and protect the membrane.

Use of Compatible Primers

VaproShield’s self-adhered and liquid applied materials adhere to common construction substrates without primers. Field adhesion testing is recommended, either separately or as part of mock-up construction, directly on the job site. Primers can improve adhesion to substrates.
